Something fundamentally annoys me about online social networks being businesses first. I'd love to see a grassroots network grow up like topsy, one that isn't "funded" and doesn't have a model except to bring people together. I really like what Dave said last week about Web 2.0's much-touted two-way nature having been with us from the beginning. What were BBSes and Usenet? Chopped liver? As for the web, I set up my first web-based message board coming up on 10 years ago in July, and an iteration of the community is still going strong, last I heard taking about two million page views a month, managed by an international volunteer committee and funded by donations. I guess I resent having my online socializing monetized at all. I don't think we need the VCs to get together with people online any more than we need them to phone a few friends and meet for dinner. Socialize the socializing I say! Could happen on an OPML community server Lots of the pieces for a full-featured social space are included in the community server. Instant outlining has yet to be exploited, and I keep thinking there might be an application of it that would be appealing to a younger instant messaging crowd, even though you think of it as a workgroup tool. Hey Tom? I'd be interested in hearing about the discussion of wikis at OPML Camp. Also namespaces. Will you be doing some post event reportage? |
