So, what's the great virtue in sustainability? Joni Mitchell on the one-hit wonder, The New Radicals: There's just nothing -- the only thing I heard in many years that I thought had greatness in it was the New Radicals. I loved that song "You Get What You Give." It was a big hit, and I said, "Where did they go?" It turns out the guy [Gregg Alexander] quit. I thought, "Good for him." I knew he was my kind of guy. Of course people like me, who flit from interest to interest like a damned bee, look for validation like this. We don't find it in very many places. It's a cultural thing, particularly in the U.S. It's the sequel to gumption. First you have the guts to do a thing, then you must hang on if you have character -- even when it hurts, especially when it hurts, and especially when you no longer have the heart for it. What's smart about that? (I like the song "You Get What You Give" a lot, too, really a lot. Ironically it's an exhortation against giving up. What I hear in the song, though, is "don't give up as long your heart is in it." Speaking of Joni, did you notice the new addition to my blog's header graphic?) New Radicals – You Get What You Give |
