Andrew Sullivan can't figure out why Glenn Reynolds, who opposes torture in interrogations, wastes cycles criticizing opponents of torture. I know. It's about lining up with your folks. It feels a little like Guiliani saying he would nominate high court justices in favor of overturning Rowe, while he favors a woman's right to choose. I'm sensing that partisanism may be on its way out, with Republicans opposing the war. It's never felt right to me, in- or outside national affairs. I'm all for loyalty. But who hasn't been in a situation where you feel you shouldn't agree with a fellow employee or laugh at her joke, just because her boss is fighting with your boss. It chips away at your character whenever you engage in lining up along party lines in that way. But back to politics, if it is a trend to break ranks, you have to wonder if the two-party system finally might be experiencing some stress fissures. I'm for that. |
