With RSS conversations who needs comments? RSS conversations are much richer because it allows the simplicity of RSS to manage the relationships. Yesterday I asked a question and Dave answered it. Today I pointed out a problem I had and Dave pointed me to a solution. Frame Problem (Safari Feeds to OPML translator) Michael Jackson (of Software Engineering Fame) invented a concept called Problem Frames to help the software industry to understand different types of problem patterns, and to identify systematic approaches to recording and resolving them. One such frame is the JSP frame, which focuses on the translation of some input to some output. This method begins with analysis of the lexical input domain, which in this case could be the feed format as seen in the URL. If that were used, each collection of feeds to be translated to a different subscription file. The format is simply "feeds:url1&url2&etc". The method then analyzes the lexical output domain, which in this case is an OPML document used for subscriptions. Finally the method reviews the code needed to transform each input domain into an output domain. It seems so simple because this method works perfectly for translation problems, but not so good anywhere else. If, through this analysis, I find a good solution to translate feeds to OPML (please pretend that this is a hard problem :) I would open the door to other possibilities, such as translating OPML subscription list to Safari feeds format. Imagine being able to pull a subscription list in so you could read someone else's RSS selections, but still be able to keep it separate from yours? I share this only to share some of Michael Jackson's ideas that I've been reading about lately. Dave has already pointed out a solution for my particular problem and I see no reason to reinvent it. I need it bad. Any tools out there yet to do this? Update: "The Futer.." should be "The Future". Need I say more. Attention to detail disappears fast with a 10-month old crawling around...:) Dave answered my question. So I can start a company to provide hosting, create a tool for static rendering to take advantage of my many static sites, or something else I haven't thought of yet. I'll probably look into writing a tool. I've been wanting to learn how to do that for a while now. I've been using Safari as my aggregator of choice since Tiger shipped last year. It works a lot like the River of News concept, but it allows me to maintain several rivers according to my attention needs. Some feeds have lots of post with some good stuff, and others have sparse post with lots of good stuff. I can't get my subscription list out of Safari, which makes portability an issue. Last weekend I started to work on a script to handle this for me, but I thought maybe creating a new Tool in OPML Editer may be a better option. For now extending the OPML Conversions may be a good start. Maybe not. I'll have to look into it. |
