Fromt the OPML-Support list, mcdtracy answers the question "How to you register two OPML editors against the same blog"?: Permanent link to this item in the archive.

"I tested synchronization of two systems today and learned that you can Register two or more system against the same opml.org blog. I registered as the writer of blogs.opml.org/opmlcomm today on two Windows systems. http://blogs.opml.org/opmlcomm. What I learned is that each system will over write the posts of the other and I needed to install Cori's Tool with the sync'ing functionality from:

 http://blogs.opml.org/cori/2005/08/08

After installing and sync'ing before any saves I could effectively share the blog from two systems. Two or more writers could do this if they always remembered to sync before changes the content. If they forget then their latest set of files will be installed on the server... oops. It's also been noted elsewhere that the syncing tool has a problem if a file to be downloaded has spaces in the file name.

I believe that coordination of multiple authors on different systems against a common blog will require a re-design of the web server functionality and maybe the Editor too (sync before saves).

Steve and I went to the OPML Roadshow in Berkeley last night. Permanent link to this item in the archive.

Steve created an OPML blog along with Dave Winer's presentation, and liveblogged the event using the Outliner.

Dave's presentation was pretty brief, but it was a nice refresher of the OPML and Outlining concepts that I used when I blogged with Userland's Radio blogging tool. [?This item should not be bold?]

One of my favorite features of blogging with the Radio Outliner was using Marc's ActiveRenderer tool. (Marc, I can't track down your last name, but I used ActiveRenderer back in my 2003 Radio blogging days, and it was a dream.)

ActiveRenderer renders expandable/collapsable outline nodes into straight html right on your blog.

You really have to see an expandable/collapsable blog for yourself, here.

Dave also went over how to create a blogroll using the OPML Outliner:

Select menu item Community->Your OPML Weblog->Open blogroll.

Can't remember what happens after that ;D. I'll try to fill it in later.

The magic of Outlining lies in many things, but one concept is "delegating" nodes of your outline to other outlining folks on the web. Dave gave a demo of creating an outline, then "pulling" info of a subnode by "delegating" that node:

Dave made a new outline by selecting menu item File->New.

Dave filled in the outline with US States.

Dave highlighted the state "Florida", and using a quick menu-item operation which I didn't entirely see, he inserted a link which "delegated" the Florida node's suboutline to some URL.

Dave then hit a button (probably a "Save" button).

Voila! The Florida node in Dave's outline now had a suboutline of cities in Florida. Dave did not write the Florida cities sub-outline. Somebody else did that, and Dave pulled that other person's work into his US cities outline because he "delegated" the Florida outline node.

If a node in your outline is "delegated", it will have a red arrow at the end of the line. [Note to self: insert screenshot of a red arrow "delegated" icon here.]

A few more things: it's handy to learn the keyboard shortcuts of moving outline items up [Control + U], down [Control + D], left [Control + L] and right [Control + R].

Handy reference: Rogers Cadenhead really grokked the innards of Userland's Radio blogging tool and wrote a book: Radio Userland Kick Start. He was generous enough to publish chapter 8 of the book on his blog:

 Chapter 8: Creating Outlines.

That's all I have to write about OPML for tonight. In other news... Permanent link to this item in the archive.

Phil Wolff lives! And he's still blogging! Now Phil blogs about Skype at www.skypejournal.com. It is not owned by Skype, but is an objective publication that covers Skype. I believe they have writers in Japan and Korea, where Skype is used more widely than in the states. Click here to access the object that's linked to this item.

In addition to the renowned Phil Wolff, there were a bunch of other celebrities in at the OPML Roadshow's Berkeley stop. You can read about them on Dave Winer's blog.

OPML Support

DWS Donald Strickland's OPML Blog

DWS used to run a category on his Radio blog that allowed users to publish Radio-related questions to a certain category. Other users would chime in with answers, he would post said answers along with links to their blogs, they got whuffie and life was good.

Lisa Williams' OPML Blog

Lisa's working on an OPML Manual.

Docs on OPML Editor: docs.opml.org.

Can't wait to dig into this outline editor. Radio Userland was one of the neatest blogging tools around, as long as your root.opml file was uncorrupted. Now I can dust off my Usertalk syntax highlighting file. I'll have to dig that out when I get home tonight. Permanent link to this item in the archive.
