Picnic time for safety bears Permanent link to this item in the archive.

It's the annual picnic tomorrow for employees of the National Safety Council. We have to be all safe and stuff. Wear helmets while playing volleyball; wear ear protection in case somebody squeals with delight too loud while winning at bingo. Not really. But we are a very safe bunch. It's ironic that I work there because I feel like I'm one of the most reckless people I know.

So interesting how the mission of the organization pervades its culture. Most everybody tends to prudence, and not just about physical dangers that can kill or disable people. The prudence seeps into business decisions, too: "Well, now, that's not anything I think we want to rush into."
