Trying to get my cell phone hooked up to my computer so I can transfer some pictures and videos. The data cable came today and I'm fiddling. The driver is a virtual COM port.

Makes me feel all nostalgic and weepy.

I've been employed by the same place for almost five years, though not in the same job for that long. Out behind the office building is a large pond or small lake lined with willow trees. I tell myself every Spring that I should take a picture of the trees every day to see the gradual greening, and I never did until this year. Ideally, you'd set up a fixed spot and use a tripod to take a still every day and do one of those cool nature time lapse things. But hey, whaddya want from me? (That's my Chicago tough-guy talk. Do you like it? Neither do I.)

I've been panning the lake every few days for a couple of weeks and my phone is getting filled up so I'm motivated to get the videos transferred.

I noticed the aisle for camera and phone memory cards. Isn't it just ridiculous how many different formats and sizes and shapes and capacities? It's like watch batteries, you dread having to replace them because you're afraid you'll get the wrong one.

Hey, I got it Permanent link to this item in the archive.

Instead of selling Scripting News, it could be franchised.

You wouldn't clone the enterprise geographically, it could be balkanized by subject area using subdomains. So Dave could sell apple.scripting.com to somebody who shares his views on Apple, or politics.scripting.com to sombody else, and bigco.scripting.com to somebody else. He could try to pick kindred spirits but in the end they'd have to be able to write about whatever they liked.

There would be an upfront fee but maybe the ongoing royalty wouldn't be monetary, maybe it's links to whatever Dave's into at the moment.

Acuallly, better to do something a lot like a franchise but not truly one because a real offering is regulated like the sale of securities and it's a lot of trouble.
