Finally saw the West Wing series finale Permanent link to this item in the archive.

I think I worked out how it came off sentimental. It was subtle. There weren't any long character speeches about what a great long strange trip it's been. A few wistful looks helped things along, but I think it was the music that made the sad farewell. They used the show

theme

in several places in the last half of the episode, but slower, softer,

brass muted

strings foremost

and they even schmaltzified

the regular little tinker bells

to help you understand you're supposed to get a teeny shiver.

Dave asked "Did you guess what Mallory's gift was?" Yes.

Back to the Future Permanent link to this item in the archive.

Never noticed it before but part of the WW theme's melody is a lot like the Back to the Future theme. Oh boy, now am I going to make myself put those two side by side? Probably. No! Enough.

Accompanist Permanent link to this item in the archive.

I'm playing keyboard jockey for a presentation my boss is giving in the morning. It always feels to me just like doing piano accompaniment to a soloist.

Coroner audio fixed Permanent link to this item in the archive.

If you heard muffled sound on the Munchkin Land Coroner Steve Gillmor MP3 or Flash, try again.

I realized when I tried to show somebody at work that I must have given it some weird bitrate or kHz setting or something, so I changed it.

Why would I show a colleague who doesn't know Gillmor Gang? Well, I have been known to do the Cowardly Lion in meetings. If prompted. Doesn't usually take much encouragement.

It was CSI -- and fanfic podcasts Permanent link to this item in the archive.

I said I'd report back on what TV show is offering video meant to be mashed up or remixed. It was CSI, which doesn't interest me personally since I've never watched it, but the idea of it is a breakthrough.

I keep thinking fanfic will be moving into podcasting and vlogging. Maybe it already has and just hasn't come into my awareness. Never read a lot of fan fiction but the Jane Austen site I used to be associated with had a huge community of readers and writers, which I supported by customizing search and modifying a message board for story part posting, so I do get it, even if I don't consume it. (OK, I'll admit it. I also look down my nose at it a teeny bit.)

Of course as a couple of my favorite TV shows come to an end I can't help but wonder if we've reached a point where the worlds could be extended in new ways. Sci-fi and gaming have a rich history of extending worlds through "official" channels -- think of the Star Wars and Star Trek books. And there's plenty of unofficial channels like Star Trek and Hobbit fanfic, including erotic "slash" fiction. Doesn't it seem time for something like a West Wing fanfic podcast, audio or video -- or animation?
