Twenty minutes into Studio 60 and I know I have my new broadcast network TV show. I watch no more than one per season. Some seasons it's been less.

dotReader authoring tool to be released next month Permanent link to this item in the archive.

I've been anxious to see how the ebook content creator is going to work. The open reader format seems to have a lot of support, and dotReader, the first commercial product to use it, has been getting a lot* of attention for something in screenshotland. I sure like the idea of it. I hate PDF. It's so entrenched, it seems hopeless to think a format could unseat it, but you never know. Other legends once considered unseatable have been shown the door.

*Not as much attention as it would if it was more 2dot0ish and named Reederooneeno. ("Oh yes," she said, parenthetically. "Pattooneeo! Pattooneeno blaspooneo. Total blaspooniosity.")

Emergency internet system? Permanent link to this item in the archive.

An old-time FCC commissioner wants government help for broadcasters to provide local and emergency services.

You can't make an audience do broadcast, though, can you? What good will emergency alerts be when we're not listening to or watching the waves anymore? Already we're lots more likely to be consuming TV in a time-shifted way, and listening to the radio less and less -- but at the same time, with so many users having always-on connections, the internet is liver than ever.

Are there plans out there for an emergency internet system? Seems like somebody must be working on it, wouldn't you think?

(*Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep!* Had this been an actual emergency you would have been instructed where to tune access information from a local internet news source.)

Question is, would you sign up to get beeped about a storm or a terrorist attack, or would the message come through anyway? An unsolicited real-time message would be very uninternet-like, but I wouldn't have a problem with it if it was localized enough. I wouldn't want to be interrupted to hear about a severe thunderstorm three counties away and not headed my way.
