I got a kick out of listening to Anne's maiden appearance on Red Monk Radio. She said the "elastic cloud" seemed a more comfortable term than "grid" because it connoted an elastic waistband. I don't think a guy would think of that, or if he did, maybe he wouldn't say it.

Anne's tea party podcast idea sounds comfortable too. I don't think women talking tech would characterize commercial competition the way guys do, i.e. iPod killers, and might not like to spend so much time chatting about vendor sports in general.

David Weinberger got to try out the $100 laptop. So cute.

It's so inspiring, too. Makes you think what can be possible when the right brains are put to a task. (Like maybe a Manhattan project for ethanol. If Brazil can do it we could if we wanted to.)

BBC report on ethanol in Brazil. Note that since that BBC video was produced, the cost has gone up. An NYT piece this past summer reported that consumers now carry calculators around because the price fluxuates from day to day, and they have to figure out what's the better deal, since ethanol burns up faster.

Why is the corn lobby here so powerful? Is it really, or are the oil companies involved in the politics of it somehow? Not a rhetorical question, I really don't know.

Blizzard! Happy December. Permanent link to this item in the archive.

We're expecting 6-12 inches of snow in all before it's all come down today in the parts of the Chicago area where I live and work. I'm going to work at home. Little guy is off school. Brings back memories of fervent hopes for snow days as a kid growing up in Central Michigan.

Maybe I'll just read the WSJ Scoble-Winer debate before I dig in. No sense in rushing into anything.

Later: Man, it is nasty out there. Took me 40 minutes, after scraping and digging out, to get across the street to lay in supplies (coffee). First time in the five years I've live in this place that I got stuck in the parking lot. Shoulda walked or rousted Aaron out of bed. Isn't that what you grow a 6-foot teenager for?

Oops, got sidetracked Permanent link to this item in the archive.

The debate is interesting, really it is, and especially Dave's side is well-written, but I got distracted by the mention of Bungie, maker of Halo. I hadn't known they started in Chicago. The company history is fun. It reads like the backstory for a game.

1. Web message boards have been around for more than 10 years. (I set up my first Matt's WWWboard in 1996.) Still, few organizations understand how to get a good discussion going. Then they pout, "Didn't work. Not gonna do that again."

2. I sure would have at least replaced the phpBB icons and customized the colors for a board on the Wall Street Journal site.
