Thinking what to do with sidebarstuff.com Permanent link to this item in the archive.

Got the domain last night: sidebarstuff.com.

It's about widgets, obviously. First I thought about making a bunch of them myself. Then, I thought about asking some women makers to contribute to an archive. Then I thought, even though it would be a nice showcase for women to have little bits of their work all over a bunch of blogs, maybe it would be too blatant and clubby to make it exclusive.

Maybe an archive of selected widgets, made and mashed by independents (including a bunch of women), and presented for easy use by technical or nontechnical bloggers. Remember 10 years ago when there were all those script archives of mostly CGI/Perl stuff? I guess they still exist, for all kinds of languages; I just don't haunt them anymore for some reason. I guess I just go to Sourgeforge, where I always seem able to find some LAMP thing or other that suits my purpose.

You don't see libraries of widgets offered in this free-for-all way. Somewhere along the line in their short little life, widgets took on this 2-oh, "fundable" cast. It doesn't take millions and the blessing of a VC to make and distribute many of these things, and I think it might be a Good and Useful Undertaking to demonstrate that truth. You think?
