Teetering on the brink of Twitter Permanent link to this item in the archive.

I haven't signed up, but when Dave gets on about something, you have to listen. He says what I've heard Anne say, and other people whose opinions I admire say -- that they avoided starting with Twitter, but when they got into it, they found it's dumb and they like it. I think that's somewhat different from being dumb but they like it.

Dave also finds Deal or No Deal dumb and (or maybe but) he likes it. That nexus made me want to take an inventory of dumb things I like, to see if there's a common thread. I'll start a list and add to it as I think of things today. Leave a blurt to tell of dumb things you like. (BTW I think of my chatbox comments as a sort of twittering.) After the list takes shape, maybe we'll be able to find defining characteristics of likeable dumbness. I'm guessing the commonality will sift down to something about the mental relief of mindlessess? Not sure.

Dumb things I like:

- Playing Candyland with very little kids

- Hil's favorite joke: What's brown and sticky? A stick.

- Sprae Ann

Debatably dumb things I've notice other people like on the web:

- Avatars and cute animated smilies

- Anything on a web page that lets them do something other than sit there and read. That concept in itself isn't dumb, but people do seem to like the dumbest little gimmicks, don't you think?

Then there's the boring life thing... Permanent link to this item in the archive.

Just browsed back in Dave's twitterings, and nodded when I saw Betsy Devine's comment about performance anxiety. That's part of the reason I hesitate to join the fray, too. I suppose people who read my blog already know I don't live a very exciting life, but do I really want to prove it by talking about cleaning the bathrooms on Saturday night? I don't think so.
