Ironic dearth of video coverage of Josh Wolf release Permanent link to this item in the archive.

Nice to hear a livewithable compromise put an end to the long imprisonment of Josh Wolf, the videoblogger who dared to classify himself as a journalist.

I put him and other videobloggers in the class, but I have to say, I had a hard time this morning finding any video of the news conference last night. Amanda Congdon had a short clip of a statement outside the prison, and there was a fuzzy phone video of the impromptu press event on YouTube. Where are all the SF online video makers? Were they not at city hall for the statement, or just weren't into putting up the video right away?

I couldn't help but see a little irony in the absence of a timely response to this news in our world. The MSM does have a well-developed sense of urgency, that's one thing you have to give them. They don't call it "news" for nothing. Even trade publications like the one I work for make sure they get the news out first when it's in their topical backyard.

It's early days, I know. Maybe it's just that we're in the self-indulgent artistic expression phase when internet video journalists cover what moves them and publish when they're in the mood. That's cool, probably a natural evolution, but eventually I think we're going to expect more. And I'm not saying videobloggers should strive to emulate their mainstream cousins, but it does fit nicely within the ethos of our usercentric world to begin to think a little about what folks expect to see, and blend that factor into what you want to show.

I'm late for work and I really wanted to get that item to post before leaving. Sometimes technology is the culprit behind lack of timeliness!
