Rip the bandaid or peel it off slowly?
No place like Rome, or am I at Netherfield Park? Finally broke down and am watching Rome, the HBO series. And what do you know, it's a veritable Jane Austen adaptation reunion. Atia (Polly Walker) was Jane Fairfax in the Miramax Emma; Cicero (David Bamber) was Mr Collins in the 1995 BBC Pride and Prejudice; Julius Caesar (Ciaran Hinds) was Capt Wentworth in the most recent adaptation of Persuasion; and Antony (James Purefoy) is Tom Bertram in the 1999 pseudo-adaptation of Mansfield Park. There are a bunch of them in the Harry Potter movies, too. Seems like just a handful British actors make the rounds in these kinds of productions. The guy who plays Mark Antony is yummy. James Purefoy. He played Rawdon Crawley in the most recent Vanity Fair, and the title role in last year's Brit-take on Beau Brummell, which I haven't seen, but I think I will now. Speaking of recycling, there was a good adaptation of Vanity Fair made I think in the mid-90s, and its Becky Sharp played the older sister-in-law character in the newer version with Reese Witherspoon. I think Reese did the bad girl thing pretty well, but didn't nail the accent so well as Renee and Gwyneth. Watch out. The e-mail looks pretty legit. Don't take the link. |
