A comment on Arianna Huffington's post about the September Iraq escalation review caught my eye. Commenter olephart (#24) said The Democrats capitulated and gave Bush his money. More than money, they gave him another 500 or so American lives to throw away. That's right, about one soldier's life per U.S. senator or representative.* We should present each congressperson with the bios and pictures of our dead during the funding cycle, and ask which snuffed-out life they'd like to claim for personal sponsorship. (BTW I didn't like how Huffington and Crookandliars lampooned the stage presence of the ambassador to Iraq. I disliked what he said, too, but it only perpetuates a tired TV convention to ridicule him for not speaking the way we're used to seeing forceful, phrase-punching, adversarial pundits deliver their lines. Come on, comrades, play fair; don't stoop.) * Plus who knows how many Iraqi lives, which we don't think about or mention enough -- and don't bother to count because it would be "impossible to estimate," though even the ancients seemed able to give a rough accounting of enemy dead.
