Wonder why Lisa's Placeblogger isn't getting mentioned (that I've seen) in coverage of the closing of Backfence and talk of the viability of hyperlocal online news.

Often it seems that only commercial or "fundable" projects are deemed worthy of much notice in the Valley-centered tech sphere. Placeblogger has been funded by a grant, but that probably doesn't count. It wouldn't echo so much in here if more open source, non-profit or experimental projects were viewed as having a claim on the community's consideration. It would broaden the collective mind of the commercial side to notice the existence some of these ideas, I just know it would.

Check out the Moodle LMS community some time, for example. Its developers and users have been working together for years now to make and fit together some of the same loosely joined pieces that the social networks are just now getting around to.

My Mom's 77th birthday. Happy birthday Mom. Send her good vibes, she just had a knee replaced.

My turn next year on 08/08/08.

My older son missed the pattern by two days, born on 09/07/84.
