Two or three days ago I heard a Republican strategist on Fox suggest that the Limbaugh-Coulter-Hannity crowd has a monetary interest in seeing a Democrat in the White House. Since then a meme along the same lines has been building a little steam -- most recently some comments by Chris Matthews this morning on Morning Joe in discussing his interview with Tom DeLay last night.

Could it be true that the far right wing would sacrifice the presidency for four years of fun and basebuilding, needling a Democrat as commander in chief, especially if it's Hillary? Somehow the idea doesn't feel all that off-base or fanciful.

It's a minor reason for electing Obama. He's not such a delicious target for the rightradio, annoy-a-liberal crowd. Plus, let's face it, they'd have to be extra careful about the way they criticize him. The need to tiptoe through potential racial landmines would throw them off their rhythm.

I'd love to hear the NewsGang discuss this. Sure have been enjoying the citizen punditry, even the latest GOP guest, well... so long as it doesn't get to be a daily thing. ;-) Steve's hit on a winner with this idea.

Oh, I forgot MSNBC has embeddable video now. Let's see what the same interview clip looks like in their player.

I can't get the video to start. Can you? I get stuck on the "click for more video" still. Later: Ah, it plays for me in IE but not Firefox. Not a thing that will endear Firefox-loving bloggers to the idea of embedding.

I love that McCain will make the campaign about the war. Yes, let's do start talking about that again.
