Be sure to check out Dave Winer's podcast interview with linguist/cognitive scientist George Lakoff, and read what Dave took away from it. As a former PR person, this business of framing political discourse is fascinating to me. I only wish I could dig in and help, being of a practical turn. I want the "do tank" to step in, interesting as the theories coming out of the think tank are, and I'd like to be some part of it. Master conservative strategists Karl Rove and Dick Morris were both on Fox News tonight, both angelic as can be, piously advising against going after Obama's name and background. Right, I really trust they mean what they say. It struck me as calculated pre-spin, I don't know... some kind of insulation or advance deniabilty road paving? I kept looking over my shoulder. If there was a Pulitzer Prize for Evocative, Put-A-Picture-in-Your-Head, Make-You-Nod Metaphors, "Drive the bus into the ditch" would win it for sure. Obama used it last night as a way of explaining why Hillary can never claim as much standing on getting out of Iraq as he can. Brilliant line. Hope it makes it to the history books. |
