Don't want her, don't need her, don't like her Who knows what's going on behind the scenes or inside people's heads when it comes to the question of Hillary as VP. I've been listening -- erratically to MSM commentary about it, religiously to NewsGang commentary about it, and trying to form my own opinion. The majority opinion on NewsGang is "don't want her, don't need her, don't like her." I have to agree about the don't like her part; the way she's conducted herself in the primary campaign has been detestable at times. I don't want her as my president. However, I'm coming to see that if we want to make sure Obama moves into the White House in January, and if we want a strong workable Democratic majority in Congress, if we really want to end the war and get the healthcare system under control, we'd better swallow our resentments and combine the factions. It struck me when Steve mentioned the word "coalition" in one of the recent shows that that's the way we might be able to think of the merger of the camps and let everybody feel a little better about it. Lots of other countries have more than two main political parties, and the way they gain and hold power is by coalescing the forces needed to forge a majority. Obama and Clinton don't represent different parts of the political spectrum, not really, but oddly their supporters seem to. Maybe that difference is enough to think of them as separate minority parties and as a way to ease the pain of a desirable marriage of convenience. |
