Greetings from RSSLabs
The last few months have been an active time in the OPML space. We have seen the emergence of a number of new OPML browsers, OPML guidelines along with an OPML validator, new concepts such as Reading Lists and a lot of buzz about the format and its uses. We agree with Alex Barnett - 2006 will be a big year for OPML!
RSSLabs is excited to be part of the OPML revolution. Our lab rats have been busy experimenting with OPML/RSS and adding some new features to OPML Search that we hope will be useful to you. In this release of OPML Search, we give you the whole OPML Publish-Search-Subscribe experience.
| | You can contribute your OPML at our site. We now allow you to configure your own polling frequency or use our ping API to let us know that your OPML has been updated. Our ping interface is an XML-RPC standard API. Note that our spider now respects robots.txt conventions. You can configure your URL to never be auto-polled if you so choose. Otherwise our polling frequency is currently 24 hours. |
| | Our search engine gives you the ability to search within published OPML. You can specifically search for RSS, OPML, Podcasts or Categories. Once you find these, you can have the option to Read/Listen/View RSS feeds (this is so that you can preview a feed before you subscribe to it). You also have the option to explore the OPML file that contains the content. You can Browse the file using our OPML Browser, or Read the OPML file using our OPML Reader. In fact, if you like the OPML file, you can bookmark the page and return to it frequently to keep up with the changes – a River of News OPML Aggregator! |
| | · Candy hound that I am, I first searched for a ‘Candy Podcast’ |
| | · This allowed me to listen to audio from a podcast named ‘Candy Podcast’ that was found in the content of our 18,507 (and increasing) OPML files |
| | · I realized that I’d like to see the rest of OPML file containing this podcast, which I did using the Browse feature. Jeff Nemcher seems to be maintaining a nice OPML list of food related podcasts! |
| | · Realizing this would be a great OPML file to subscribe to, I then Read the OPML file, and bookmarked it as a River of News |
| | I also subscribe to the Web 2.0 Workgroup’s OPML Reading List and monitor it quite actively. |
| | Note that it is possible to search for a category and then read it. For example, you can search for the category (or tag) ‘News’. One can now browse and read OPML outlines that have been tagged as News. |
| | The subscribe feature of OPML Search allows you pick a default feed reader for OPML Search. Subscription to a feed will then be a one-click experience. We would love for subscription to an OPML to be a one-click experience also. Please let us know when you open your newsreader up for OPML import via a URL. Meanwhile, you can subscribe to an OPML file by using our River Of News Aggregator located at www.opmlsearch.com/read/?OPMLURL=xxxx |
| | You can then bookmark this page and come back to it periodically. Jim Moore loves reading news this way! |
| | Please note that this iteration of our newsreader is ill-behaved and fetches the RSS on demand. We plan to change this in the near future. |
| | We think that the reading list concept will really take off. We are excited to support a platform that will allow for the search and subscription to reading lists. |
Thank you for your interest in OPML Search. We value your opinions and contributions to this emerging OPML eco-system. Please do send feedback, opinions, bugs and suggestions to me at blabovitch@yahoo.com.
