OPMLToWordPress
I cleaned up the script a bit and added documentation and I think it's OK to release. I'm using this script to automatically move posts on my OPML blog to my WordPress blog. Use at your own risk and PLEASE, PLEASE backup your WordPress database before using! The script is a bit of a hack.
You can download it here.
Here are the docs:
| | This is a PHP script. Given a year, month and day of an OPML blog file, this script creates entries in a WordPress database corresponding to the posts in that file. Post date and categories are preserved. |
| | If you browse to the file with now parameters the current day will be assumed. |
| | The scripts outputs a web page showing the posts and messages is it attempts to place the posts into the WordPress database. Error messages are in bold. |
| | Edit the constants at the top of the script to correspond to your MySQL and WordPress setup and OPML user name. |
| | The function sanitize_title_with_dashes currently returns the given text. When I developed this script I used the code from the WordPress function of the same name but I do not have the rights to distribute this code. I don't know how well the script will work without that code. |

Parents "Hovering" at Colgate
I was reading the Seattle PI, which I do rarly, over lunch and did a double take on a story - Hamilton, NY! That is the very small town where I went to college and you don't often here it talked about. The story is about how parents today are being much more involved in their kids college experience:
| | "This is a group of parents who have been more involved in their children's development since in utero on than any generation in American history," said Helen E. Johnson, author of "Don't Tell Me What To Do, Just Send Money," a guide for college parents. "I think colleges have been far too responsive in inappropriate ways to this very savvy group of consumers." |
| | Another factor is cell phones. The era of the 10-minute weekly check-in from the pay phone in the hall has given way to nearly constant contact. Rob Sobelman, a Colgate sophomore, says when students walk out of a test, many dial home immediately to report how it went. One friend checks in with her mother every night before going to sleep, he said. |
| | "Even 10 years ago, parents couldn't even get hold of their children," said Colgate President Rebecca Chopp. "If you reached them once a week it was a miracle." Now she says she's hearing from older alumni who are "worried their grandchildren won't learn accountability and responsibility." |
Hmm. Well, I imagine Casandra will be like me and want her parents to get out of town ASAP :-). Colgate was a great distance from home. With a 4.5 hour drive there we no chance of an on the whim visit but if I really had to get home I could. Casandra has talked about going to UW, just a ferry ride from home. Well, she's 11. We'll see what she thinks in a few years.

A Nice Walk
I just got to the ferry terminal after a 40 minute walk from the new house. Being able to walk to the ferry is one of the big things I was looking forward to. It's another beautiful day in Seattle.
