When your laptop can't connect with any network Permanent link to this item in the archive.

And so it went with me at the conference I was at for the past 3 days. Like many, I do much of my work online and I had just assumed that the technology would continue to serve me well.

It failed me again and I was about to swear off all technologies.

Mind you, I was at the Indiana Computer Educator convention (David Pogue keynoted....more about that later) and I found it quite ironic. So here's my bad days:

I couldn't connect with the free wi-fi in the lobby, nor the other spots in the convention and I even tried the $9.95 for 24hour ethernet thing in my room. I probably invested/wasted 5 hours trying to fiddle with settings and talk with customer support: no internet. And no internet meant no access to my stuff (besides the online quizzes that I needed to create).

The last thing the Customer Support guy said, and this was when I gave up and said "Let's just chalk this up to the computer," is perhaps I should reinstall the drivers and see if that would work (it did for him with the same model I had).

I got home, reinstalled the drivers, and all is good with connecting.

Lesson: When going away on trips, bring the install disc that came with your computer (esp. if it's a Toshiba or another WinDoze machine); you'll be happy you did.
