elliptical . . . OPML blog

2 other really cool things about watching the instantOutliner community gel: Permanent link to this item in the archive.

  • watching how other folks think
I think your instantOutline is a mirror for the way your brain works (more on this later, perhaps?)
  • watching how ideas about the ways to use and organize instantOutlines spread through the small community I'm watching. Almost viral

Here's a hack for Ed's wishlist item for a menu entry for multi-computer synch. Permanent link to this item in the archive.

(I suspect this will be overwritten by updates)

Ed's tested this, and says that it works, but I haven't. It compiles and runs, but I can't tell if it does what I want it to, and won't be able to do so until tomorrow AM.

go to opml.root->system.menus.menubar. Select a location to place the entry (I chose Community and added it under "Proxy Settings..."). Add a node and name it (I named mine "Synchronize"). Double-click it and insert the contents of the code below into it. Save and exit. Once you get back to the main window you should see the option in the menu.

This asks you for a date (I used the m/d/YYYY format, and it doesn't fail, but I also don't know if it works). Defaults to 1/1/1900.

Synchronize

 local (mydate)
mydate = "1/1/1900"
if dialog.ask("Get files changed since when?", @mydate)
   dotOpmlSuite.folderWatcher.getFilesChangedSince (mydate)

instantOutlining taking off Permanent link to this item in the archive.

There is some amazing interchange happening around instantOutlines in the admittedly small segment on the OPML Editor community that I'm aware of.

a very interactive community, lots of interchanges, people hacking at OPML Editor and publishing their findings and trying out other's hacks.

The big weakness here that I can see is the lack of notification when someone subscribes to your iO - there's no good way yet to know if they're seeing what you write....

some good instantOutlines I subscribe to:

I guess Dave's going through to Miinesota, so no Joy for Madison :-( Permanent link to this item in the archive.

If Dave's cutting across to the Soo and then back into the states, he'd be a pretty easy shot across the UP and down towards Madison. Maybe he'll stop here for old time's sake? Nothing in the roadshow mailing list about it. Anyway, here's hoping! Permanent link to this item in the archive.

Dave's in Sudbury! Permanent link to this item in the archive.

It's funny that Dave says the map mislead him on the time it would take; when I look at google's directions, it's just about exactly what I remember from countless trips from the Toronto airport to Sudbury.

I lived in Sudbury, Ontario, for 3 formative years - up to my 13th birthday. Wow. Memories....

Nickel capital of the world. Are the Big Nickel and the SuperStack still there, I wonder?

 Ice skating across Ramsey Lake

 my first cigarette

picked up the euphonium in 7th grade, which became the baritone horn in 8th (back in the states) and the trombone in 9th. I haven't really played since high school.

summer camp at St John's Island; polar bear club, tether ball, bad camp food, and assorted other fun.

my step-father co-owned an Italian restaurant up there, which went out of business before we left. He was kind of a prick.

 my first pr0n

my first crush, Anne Marie Turner

I think they only call it the Soo in Ontario, not across Canada. Some of my step-father's family lived there.

Thunderbird doesn't like GMail (or vice-versa) Permanent link to this item in the archive.

I have spent lots of time trying to send emails to the opml-* lists using Mozilla Thunderbird. Here's the funny thing.

I have 2 gmail accounts (yes, I know this is probably against the usage rules). I've used 1 to subscribe to both opml lists.

When I respond to an email from one of the lists in Thunderbird, it leaves the gmail server as though it's coming from my other account, so the list rejects it. I've resorted to using the borwser interface to respond to these mails.

Anyone have any ideas what I'm doing wrong? I've tried various configuration changes (I won't list them all here) with no joy....

Recently not having much to say here, I'm going to play around with putting my food-log (flog?) here to try to track my weight-loss efforts/

I'm under no illusion that anyone will want to read this, but maybe itll keep me honest ;->
