Responding to Ed's (blog : iO) frustration about the buddy window taking focus, I previously experienced it and quickly after starting to use the instantOutliner quickly looked for the setting that would make it better. I found it at dotOPMLData.root->dotOPMLData->instantOutliner->prefs->flBuddyWindowComesToFront. Set it to false to keep the buddy window from popping to the front. This seemingly is not overwritten (yet) by updates - but maybe Dave hasn't updated this tableset yet.
