Using OS X's Automator to backup files to Backpack.

The folks at Nonstopmac.com put together a tutorial on how to backup files on your Mac to your Backpack account using Apple’s Automator tool included with OS X 10.4. Pretty cool stuff. Thanks for writing this up guys!

just so this host switch makes sense, i paid $300 for a year of hosting with pair and that got me a 24% discount. i also pay $24/month for basecamp which allows for 15 active projects. consider that for a one time payment of $500 i can get everything i'm getting now and more. only domain registrar fees will remain for me. Permanent link to this item in the archive.

if you are considering a textdrive mixed grill special, here's the faqs all on one page. Permanent link to this item in the archive.

i'd know i was living in an xml-rpc dreamland if i could export all of my basecamp projects and import them into joyent easily. a boy can dream, right? Permanent link to this item in the archive.

that's a good biz, taking the exported xml files of various app like radio userland and basecamp and whatever and making it fit into another system. i know people do that but for average joe like me this just ain't a normal activity and thus doesn't happen most of the time. Permanent link to this item in the archive.

according to ptrourke on the textdrive forum, he does the math and says that "the investment is recouped in less than a year (11 months if you don't care about Joyent, 8 months if you count the MixedGrill Joyent account as equivalent to the $15 Joyent plan)". imagine that. after 11 months, i would no longer have to pay for hosting. and if i give up basecamp, that's the only other real business related expense i have on the net. so, i'd basically be free from monthly hosting bills in 11 months. wow. well, that doesn't include registrar fees but still, i'm just shocked at this upcoming reality. Permanent link to this item in the archive.

right on.. opmlPete added my OPML Editor instiki wiki to his instant outline. the first thing i'm going to do when i get a textdrive account is move the instiki over there. they'll setup an instiki on port 80 with no problem. Permanent link to this item in the archive.

according to pair, i can get a pro-rated refund. hello textdrive, here i come. i've been on pair for years and it kinda makes me sad to leave such an excellent hosting service but really, it's just a financial thing for me and i have to do it. looking forward to something new though and textdrive looks really nice for my needs. if anyone can tell me why i shouldn't go with them, please speak up cause i plan to act fast. thanks. Permanent link to this item in the archive.

i get so tired of linking things. for something so central to blogging, i find myself just plain tired of playing the linking game. yes, i want to share links but that requires so many steps. even adding a few links per post per day adds up to so much time. the closest i've come to linking nirvana lately is writing in a wiki. just camelCase some words and there you go. instant link. of course, it's not a link to another site in particular unless that link has already been created (ala a glossary) but that kind of mind reading simplicity is what i'm after. how about a global web glossary that just links everything up, computer you are supposed to be smart, right? how come you can't figure out that just a few minutes ago i linked up the word textdrive and i'd like that linked up here as well? but no, i must go through the same antics over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and overand over and over and over........ ad infinitum. how many more times will i choose add link? how many more times in my life will i type ahref? here lies donovan. he linked more times than he blinked. Permanent link to this item in the archive.

for a one time payment of $500 i could replace my current host at pair. i could also replace basecamp with joyent. and i could get offsite backups. sounds pretty good to me. i'd sure miss basecamp though and i like mixing and matching things. still though, the price can't be beat even if i don't use joyent and continue to use basecamp. makes me wisht there was a mixed grill plan that excludes joyent for those of us who have basecamp. Permanent link to this item in the archive.

wish i would have signed up for a textdrive mixed grill special. alas, i've got till december 1, 2006 at my current host, pair. i love pair but they are just too costly for my needs. Permanent link to this item in the archive.

slick icons, koz. thanks. now, how do i install them exactly? these end in .bmp and the ones in my folder do not. as a matter of fact, when i double click on one of the icons in the folder, it opens an accounting app on my mac. strange. Permanent link to this item in the archive.

i asked if the metaweblog api is on the instiki radar via the instiki email support list and got back this reply from rich morin (rich, i appreciate your feedback. i'm not debating the security or any other aspect of the api. i just want to know if instiki might support it. if another wiki supports it i'll jump ship cause i want to drive a wiki with my opml editor. simple as that.) Permanent link to this item in the archive.

OPML and Wikis Permanent link to this item in the archive.

this is exciting to read from dave about tying in opml editor and wiki's. now that i've been really using instiki the wiki for OPML Editor (The Missing Manual) i've so wanted a way to use the power of my editor to drive this thing.

OPML to Wiki?.

How long will it be before there's a wiki that supports the MetaWeblog API? A quick search on Google indicates that it might already have happened.

Anyway, send me a pointer to such a wiki, and I'll try to get the OPML Editor working with it. If there are problems, I'll document them, and when they're fixed, I'll try again.

There's absolutely no reason that you shouldn't be able to edit wiki-text using an outliner, and I bet it would be pretty useful.

i wonder what the design decision was that made dave keep the OPML:www folder outside of the OPML Application folder? this is the one major heirarchical difference i can see from radio userland. Permanent link to this item in the archive.

imagine if you went to a hardware store and bought a fancy new hammer. then, every time you pounded in a nail, other people who bought that same hammer were alerted to the fact that you pounded in a nail. and likewise for you. this hammer community has one thing in common, the tool. they also have another thing in common. the hammer community which arose out of the use of the tool. one leads to the other which leads to what... i don't know. but i do enjoy building things and learning from others who are building things.
