A stream of thoughtsciousness
My name is Donovan Watts. I am the Founder of Getting Sites Built, a web design agency.. we plan, design and build websites. Donovan's thoughtStream is my weblog. For kicks, I hoop. ![]()

"Wake up! Wake up!" exclaimed Sprocket. "I think I found something to allow me to act as a bluetooth tethered modem for Tin Machine. Hang on, I'll digest the page and report back."
"Donovan, I have some good news to report." Tin Machine continued, "Working together with Sprocket and following SvenOnTech's most excellent* instructions, we were able to connect to the internet and have Sprocket (xv6700) act as a bluetooth phone."
"Excellent news!" I proclaimed, congratulating the team on this significant technological breakthrough.
"However, the connection had dropped a few times so we need to continue testing." said Sprocket.
I told the team to keep digging and that this was very good news indeed. There's always tweaks to be made but that fact that we even connected at all is a good thing.
The thing about cellular is that your access is severely limited compared to satellite. And the speed is slower, although on the EV-DO network it's acceptable enough for me. Oh, and I can't use Sprocket as a phone and surf at the same time. It's one or the other. Those are some fairly hefty cons.
There are pros. Cheap. Much more inexpensive than satellite, at least with regard to up front costs and perhaps maintenance and upgrade costs as well. Monthly access is about $40 cheaper by going cellular. Size is a huge factor. With satellite, I need to accomodate a large satellite dish and some components inside the rig, not to mention the power requirement. With cellular, all I need is my phone and laptop. No problem. And I don't need to even have a vehicle to accomplish this feat.
The coverage issue, to me, is the big one. If I had unlimited resources, I'd continue to keep the Verizon unlimited data plan so that Sprocket could always be in touch and I'd have a Motosat satellite dish so that I'd always have fast internet access from my laptop in and around the rig. I don't have unlimited resources so I'm currently thinking small and cheap. That means cellular. And that's why it was so important that Sprocket and Tin Machine figure out how to use Sprocket as a bluetooth wireless modem so that I could surf the net with a laptop and not the ridiculously tiny screen that Sprocket was born with. "Sorry Sprocket but surfing the web on a mobile device sucks. I miss my Nokia770."
We tell it like it is here on The Go! Team. No punches held back so Sprocket can take it when I say things like that to him. And that's why Daisy is fine with the fact that she will be replaced someday. You see, it is our spirit, not our physical beings that make up our fabulous team. When one member leaves, or gets replaced, that's the cycle of life and we embrace it. For Daisy will always live on and so will Sprocket and the others. That's the way it is. We're all together, alone.
*When in San Dimas, do as Bill and Ted do.
Our mentor George is retracing parts of the Lewis and Clark expedition. Looks like a lot of fun and spectacular views. MsTioga takes George and his team everywhere. Today we looked at a Tioga for sale in the hood and it listed at 10K firm. It was pretty nice looking but that's about twice as much as we want to spend on a new ride.
Good old Daisy.. she keeps on ticking. I whole heartedly recommend Volvo, especially the 83' wagon variety that is Daisy. Today I considered yanking out the rear seat to make room for a couple of heavy duty deep cycle batteries. If she can hold enough battery power to keep my digital wanderlust in full abandon, then I'm considering throwing down a few notes to get her closer to boondocking ready.
Daisy likes her new drapes. She has requested that we complete the job and have them tailored to fit "just right." I agree with Daisy that going the extra mile would be a very nice touch. This would be a perfect barter exchange but I will consider a tailor or seamstress or even me to make this happen. I haven't got a sewing machine but I'm sure I could find someone who does.
I met new neighbor Shane today. He's a nice guy taking care of his Dad. Oh, and the mouse I mentioned yesterday? Well, let's just say I don't think we'll be hearing from him anymore?
Sprocket added 'Links' and 'Solar' pages to the Boondocker wiki. On the links page it lists George and Tioga of course and boondocking.org as well. I've only scratched around at this site but it appears to be an online database of boondocking coordinates as entered by users. Nice. As our new motto says, Boondockers of the world, unite and take over!
I get 'an error occurred' when trying to connect to the BloggerCon webcast. Amyloo asks if this is how I used to do streaming. I don't think so, Amyloo. I used Nicecast on the Mac. People would tune directly into my laptop, Tin Machine, to hear the cast. ![]()
