"Send/Receive Email. Waiting, waiting... Hmmm... nothing." Sprocket tried again. "Send/Receive Email. Waiting, waiting... nothing, again!"
Sprocket doesn't know that today the kind gentleman at Verizon Circuit City pulled the plug on his unlimited data plan. No more checking email and surfing the net for you my friend. I have the power to bring you into this world and I also, as evidenced by your lack of connectivity, can disconnect you from it as well. That's a harsh truth but it also portrays the ultimate struggle, man vs. machine.
My team is important to me but the day I forget that they are machines is the day I no longer advance, lingering in my own misguided belief that an electronic device can somehow supercede my need for upgrading and improving my digital posse simply because it's character, coupled with my sense of nostalgia and sentimentality for gadgets, has grown on me.
"I love you guys! Go The Go! Team!" I yelped out loud lest any of the members of the team start to suspect that I'm entering these treacherous notions into the Atlas. A captain's journal reveals all. It is not meant for the eyes of his crew. It's meant for historical record should the ship go down. A sort of living black box, readable by other internet enabled humans.
One machines loss is another's gain. Tin Machine, my PowerBook G4, felt the sleek new card slide into his slot. Within minutes, the installation was accomplished and I clicked on the Connect button. A few moments later, without airport, without dialup, without ethernet, we were surfing the web. A few hundred dollars down and 60 bones a month buys us a Kyocera KPC650 BroadbandAccess/NationalAccess PC Card from Verizon. And now the net torch is passed from Sprocket to Tin Machine. It just makes sense to move the plan over to the laptop.
"Why not order from EVDOinfo.com?" Tin Machine started in even though he knows darn well why, since he was there when I made the calls and decisions. The reason we bought it locally was basically because while we would have ultimately saved about $50 going with EVDOinfo.com, getting it in town meant I didn't have to wait for shipping. And since the Team has decided to head up to Washington next week to retrieve our things, relaying them to a cargo container in the desert of Hesperia, time is of the essence. Once again.
Daisy will be staying behind for this leg. She's running strong, don't get me wrong. And now that we popped a new fuse into puka #8, her door locks and clock started working! The wonders of a complacent driver and a fuse. Who would have known that Daisy had power locks? I always thought it was strange that Daisy had power windows but not power locks. And I always wished the clock worked. I was one fuse away from enlightenment for a year. Makes you wonder.
We'll be taking Parent's silver truck for it's cargo carrying capacity. The intent is to gather items from Washington, pickup the remainder of items in Oakland and drive them down to the desert. At that time, we'll shift the contents into the container and decide what to do next with our lives, now that all possessions are united.
One final thought for now. d770 is back. He's an awesome team member and we're so glad to see him again. More about d770 will be written.
