For those of you following along, I'll attempt to write about where I'm at now and all the positive things that have come about since my laptop and personal belongings were stolen while I slept. I'm using another borrowed laptop to write this entry until I can afford to get my own laptop once again.
First of all, THANK YOU SO MUCH EVERYONE!!!! The support, both mentally and financially, that I've received over the last few days from people I know as well as people I don't know has been TREMENDOUS! I am so humbled by the generosity shown to me in my time of need.
Thank you Milton, Amyloo, Tom M., Anita, Sherry and Jon, Staci K., Randy (Kenneth), Edward D., Marc B., Mr. artformula, and anyone else I've missed. You are all in my prayers and it means the world to me that you've reached out.
Today I've been on the phone and email trying to get my life back in order. It's a tough road to walk in today's world when you don't have any form of identity. For instance, I have a bank account with some cash in it but I cannot get to my money because I have no ATM card, no ID. I can't drive anywhere technically because I have no driver's license anymore. My passport was in my backpack so I can't fall back on that form of ID. Etc,..
So, I'm going to head out to my storage unit, dig out my birth certificate and social security card and see if I can re-join society using those two pieces of ID.
I called the SF Police department to follow up on my theft report. Guess what? They haven't entered it into the system yet!! Can you believe that? I filed the report Friday morning and it took a call to the police department from me in order to get them to start figuring out where the report went.
I called Apple computer to have them add my PowerBook serial number to their database of stolen computers. Apple said the Police need to make that report. So, I called the Police and they said they don't do that. I would need to report it to Apple. See the frustrating loop here? Egad.
Hmmm. what else? Well, good news is that I had insurance on my mobile phone so for $50 I got that replaced and it just arrived. So, at least I'll have my cell phone operable soon.
That's all for now I guess. I'll try to keep posting my findings here as I dig in, trying to get back on track.
Bottom line is this... bad things happen. Friends and family and the kindness of strangers and those you know alike are the silver lining in this world. It's true that good things can come out of bad circumstances.
Here's another note.. the thief tossed one of my credit cards onto the Golden Gate bridge. Someone found it and turned it into the bank. I wonder where the thief threw my other credit cards, driver's license, calling card (Gee, I wonder if they'll make some calls with this?), AAA card, passport, checks? Who knows? Maybe someone will turn some of those things in as well. That would save a lot of footwork on my part, trying to replace them.
Oh yeah, and this is where I need to bring up the possibility of identity theft. Since I went to the tax person's office the day before my stuff was stolen, I had the last few years of tax papers in my backpack. Normally, that kind of paperwork is tucked away in a filing cabinet but not this time. Boy, someone could have a field day with my identity if they wanted to. Let's hope for the best.
