As I pulled into the parking lot of the Longs Drugs in Simi Valley today, all the windows were down in my car. I put the gear into park, left the windows wide open and strolled into the store. I aint got nothing to steal. All I have is on my person. It's a newfound freedom I'm experiencing. Letting go of the constant need to protect my valuables, cause I don't have any valuables left to protect. Well, my wallet is in my pocket and my phone is on my hip but no longer do I need to keep such an eye on my backpack and laptop. That duty now lies with the new owner of my old laptop. I wonder if the new owner has any idea the PowerBook they are using to surf the net is stolen? Do they care? If not, why not? What would you do if you discovered that the laptop you had just purchased was actually stolen goods? Would you say "poor sap" and keep using it? Or would you call the police and turn it in? ![]()
When you lose your Driver License, all you need to do to replace it is go to the DMV, fill out a form, cough up $20 and they'll send you a new one. You don't need to produce any form of ID and you don't even need to have a new picture taken. ![]()
AAA will also send you a new card if you go into their office and request a new one. ![]()
Not having access to my checking account since the theft has been a royal pain in the ass. Even though I went into my bank with an expired passport (my current passport was stolen) and an expired driver license (my wallet was stolen) and plead for them to give me some of my money, they would only give me $200. Hmph. Takes more than that to survive. I'm not sure the logic that allows me to only take out $200 of my own money but you can't really argue with an institution who holds all of your cash. Once my new ATM card arrives, I'll be back in business. And then I'm going to move all my money out of Washington Mutual and into another bank who gives a shit. ![]()
I hope all this ranting about my recent theft isn't making this journal boring or a downer. I'm hoping all these entries might be of some use to other's who might have to go through what I'm going through someday. ![]()
Everyone reading this. Stop reading this and go backup your computer. Trust me. And then change your password. And then imagine if your computer was stolen. What would you do first? Freak out? That's what I did. Where do you keep your backups? What if the thief walks away with your backups as well because they are sitting right next to your computer? Wish I had backed up recently. ![]()
If you lose your passport or it's stolen as mine was, the first thing you should do is report it stolen. And then order up a new one. And then brace yourself for the inevitable delays at airports. Visit this site for the forms. ![]()
