I'm committed to spending less time on the computer. That's right. Less time on the computer. That shouldn't be too hard to accomplish since I've got the sickness. I've had it since 1980something or other. Though the Vic-20 was my first computer, I don't think I actually came down with the sickness until I got my Amiga 2000 and my parents and I moved to Hawaii.
We'd moved many times before and I had to make new friends wherever we landed. And so I did. But this move was different. This time I reached out for friends but had a difficult time forging (m)any friendships. I had been online for years, starting with Compu$erve and dabbling in many of the other services available and then of course came the internet. Essentially, I can now look back and see the gradual replacement of many of my real world friendships with virtual ones. Cyber friendships. Online friends became the norm for me.
Once I graduated from the University of Hawaii, I decided to move back to the mainland. I came and went a few times more and then decided once and for all to move to the Bay area in Northern California and get a proper web job. And so I did. Along with scoring the job, I resolved to be as social as possible, accepting darn near any invitation thrown my way, regardless of the venue. And so I did. It's been great to have a couple of handfuls of friends, real life friends that I can actually interact with in person. I still have my online friends as well so I guess I'm getting my cake and eating it too.
But the time has come for me to spend less time on the computer and more time in the real world. The theft of my laptop has revealed itself as the mechanism by which I have been hurtled into a direction that involves colliding with people. And I like it.
Really, it's not healthy the amount of time I've spent behind the screen. And so I will change.
Need I say that this change will result in less frequent posting here? It's all about frequency.
