Google spreadsheets is interesting. Today I tried it out and figure this might be a handy way to continue my 'No data left behind on the laptop' campaign. I entered all the costs to fix up Niko right and proper. I then shared the spreadsheet with Pop. We can both edit the file. On the web. Pretty cool. Bye-bye Excel.
I also started a new page on my Backpack account called donoVAN, where I'm putting everything Vanagon related. And yes, I shared this page as well. I like keeping my data on the web and I like being able to share it. A feature I really like on my Backpack is the ability to set a reminder. For instance, I have to move my Van tomorrow by 10am or get a ticket. I enter this reminder into my Backpack and tomorrow morning, I'll get both an email and a text message to my mobile phone telling me to move it or lose it.
Backpack also includes Writeboards. Writeboards are pages of text that can be shared. Each revision is saved so you can go back in time, revisiting earlier changes. I've been wondering what to use my Writeboards for and I finally found a very good use. I am entering my Resume as a writeboard.
Some of you may be asking, "Why is Donovan still using a client side blogging application (I use OPML Editor) when he is moving away from client side data storage?" Well, I'll nobody is really asking that question so I took the reigns. Here's the deal. OPML Editor is my blogging app of choice. I enjoy writing in an outliner. It's true that I'm attempting to keep all data on the net instead of my laptop and that goes for my blog. The neat thing is that OPML Editor, though a client application, upstreams all of your files to a public server, automatically. I've known this all along but never really appreciated how cool and useful that feature is until my laptop was stolen. Thanks to Dave Winer, he zipped up my blog folder and emailed it to me. I reinstalled OPML Editor on a borrowed laptop, unzipped the folder and kept on blogging.
