I could spend the day just lying here Permanent link to this item in the archive.

On the shores of Berkeley, I can see the Golden Gate. I can see the Bay Bridge. The wind is steadily blowing and I've been reading, sleeping, eat fig newtons, rearranging the van yet again. It's perhaps my laziest day yet as of late. I did go for a skateboard ride along the coast, pushing off and cruising long distances on my Gravity board, almost as tall as I am.

I would show you a picture but I have no way to transfer it to my laptop as this old iBook has neither Bluetooth nor can it talk to my Pocket PC via the USB cable. Two separate worlds.

The cars endlessly parade by me in the background, heading for the city or Downtown Oakland or San Jose or up North to who knows where. I'm glad to be out of that stream. The space I found today is right on the ocean and for company there are about 15 other vehicles. The owners are either off riding bikes, walking dogs, windsurfing, or plain old kicking it on the beach. It's Sunday after all.

Power is an issue. My mobile phone is constantly running out of juice. This laptop I use to write steadily heads toward empty. My electric razor doesn't work so well the less charged it gets. And I've put my electric toothbrush, which cleans my teeth so enthusiastically, away in storage. Boondockers can't have electric toothbrushes. That's just wrong.

If my Van didn't need so much freakin' high priority work done to it, I'd be saving my pennies for a few solar panels, a large battery source and maybe another Verizon wi-fi account. Alas, I think being able to brake and steer come first.

The journey is not just a road to new places, it's the steps I take on route. First I must either get all the safety hazards fixed and then I can focus on the fun stuff. Of course, impatient bastard that I am, I want it all, right now.

The folks at the Buslab considered a trade. I would work on their web site, they would work on my Van. Consideration was considered but in the end, they wanted my money. So, I drove away, wondering when my brakes would go out or my steering would bust. Would it be on the Bay Bridge? Or when I'm hurtling down Fell street on a step incline? Maybe they won't go out for a while yet. I'm playing with fire but what else can I do?

Make some damn money, that's what I can do. So, I'm considering ways to make more money. I've fired off about twenty resumes in the last month and I've only heard back from one place. The Bay area is a tough market, I tell you.

OK, so all the computer type gigs are impossible to get. Well, I'm a trained massage therapist, I think I'll give that another go. On the Spot is hiring. Maybe I can work at Whole Foods doing back massages a couple times a week. Then there is always a coffee barista job. I drink enough of this stuff that you'd think I'd be a natural at serving it up. Maybe I should get certified to teach English as a second language? Are there many jobs in that field? I had dreams of boondocking and writing about my adventures but I'm growing cynical about that possibility. I've got a handful of readers and have never earned a dime from Google Ads. Web work has all but dried up so what's a bloke to do? I don't know. I'll keep on looking.
