Isn't having new shoes great? It always make me feel a bit bumptious, like Enid Blyton's Brer Rabbit: "Now once it happened that Brer Rabbit bought himself a pair of new shoes. They were mighty smart ones - black with red laces - and Brer Rabbit was as pleased with them as a dog with two tails. He showed them off to all the animals and they got very tired of seeing his new shoes. "If you got some new manners it would be better," grumbled Brer Fox. 'New shoes are wasted on you," said Brer Wolf. "You should spend your money on a new face. I'm tired of seeing that old one of yours." These rude remarks didn't upset old Brer Rabbit at all. He just went on wearing his new shoes, showing them off, and being as grand as could be till Brer Fox and Brer Wolf longed to get hold of him and spank him." |
