Setting Command Keys in the OPML Editor Permanent link to this item in the archive.

I've started to use the OPML Editor to blog and one of the things I was hoping for was a keyboard shortcut to open the outline for the day. Digging a bit in the codebase and with a little bit of Frontier knowledge, you can do this yourself. Here's the step-by-step:

0. Make a complete backup of your installation by quitting the editor and archiving the entire application folder.

1. Open the OPML Editor app and bring it to the front.

2. Type the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + j (Cmd + j on the Mac) and in the resulting dialog type:

 system.menus.menubar

3. Scroll down until you see the "Community" menu item at the top level of the outline and expand it.

4. Scroll down until you see the "Your OPML Weblog" menu item and expand it.

5. Highlight the line that reads "Open today's outline"

6. In the lower left of the window, use the pop-up menu to choose "Set Command Key..."

7. Type a character in the resulting dialog box. I used the number "1"

Note: Be careful about what you choose because if it conflicts with another shortcut, you'll find yourself *very* frustrated and restoring from backup.

Close the window and you're done!

Background came from Brent Simmon's piece for the Frontier website back in 1998.
