I want to clarify one thing. I am not new to RSS. Rather, I have been trying to integrate the use of an aggregator (say that 3 times real fast :-)) into my daily routine for some times. I have tried various online aggregators, as well as several desktop applications -- Owl being the one that I liked the best. I find that when I've been busy and gotten out of the habit of checking the aggregator of the moment regularly that I forget to add it back in to my daily routine. This leads me to wonder why that is.
Perhaps the problem is that aggregators tend to show you too much or too little when you are browsing. Newspapers have the advantage of allowing you to glance at a page and read what catches your interest. The Google news page has that kind of feel to it. It's not so much that I'm not comfortable with RSS, more that I think there is a lot of work to be done fine tuning how to display the feeds. If I had lots of spare time, I'd probably experiment with developing my own aggregator but until then, I'll continue to try other people's aggregators until I find one that hits the sweet spot.
One last point, the Google Reader has one more thing to its advantage. I live in the browser, in particular Firefox. A utility gets about 5 extra stars (out of 10) if it is integrated into the browser. That is part of why I keep trying to find or build an OPML editor that is integrated into the browser. I think AJAX is up to the challenge. I just need to tune my Javascript skills :-).
