"Glædelig Jul!" Today, my ex-wife wrote me out of the blue, wishing me a "Glædelig Jul!" That is the Danish Seasons greetings. "Jul" is Danish for wheel. The greeting goes back to the olden times where the cosmic "Jul" turns from the darkening of the onset of winter, and to the lightening of the returning sun, bringing spring, and rebirth to the world. It is a good, non-religious statement of hope. |
