Mark Bernstein of Eastgate hosted a "non-conference" this past weekend. This was the third such conference I've attended and was, by far, the best. Mark has an ability to bring A-list and C-list folks together in the same room and the result is always an incredible sharing of ideas, plans, goals and techniques. This conference focused on hypertext creative non-fiction -- past, present and future. As always, the discussions for two days ranged wide and deep. I have always admired Dave Winer's descriptions of non-conferences but have never been able to attend one. I was at one this weekend and, though Winer wasn't there, he was there -- a Steinian sentence. Finally, something should be said about Mark Bernstein as host: he is patient, sensible, joyous, prods a bit, supports always and one of the reasons why I always try to attend is because he makes it look easy. The Italian Renaissance word sprezzatura fits perfectly. |
