DEWEY DEFEATS WHO? Permanent link to this item in the archive.

Pieter Overbeeke asks "who is that guy holding up the newspaper anyway?" in his blog. Strangely enough I was thinking about Harry yesterday, so I did some research.

The guy in the photo is Harry S. Truman, who was the 33rd President of the United States. The reason he's holding up that newspaper is not because one of Donald Duck's nephews had beaten him to submission, no! Harry was appointed to Vice President while Franklin D. Roosevelt was President, then Franklin died, so Harry took the Oval Office by default.

He decided to drop the bombs on Japan and liked to say "The buck stops here" and "If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. ;->"

In 1948 there was another election and apparently no one expected him to win, including The Chicago Daily Tribune, who declared that Harry had been beaten by Thomas E. Dewey. He didn't. Harry won

Interesting that the 'S' in his name apparently does not stand for anything! It was a common practice in southern states, including Missouri, where Harry was born, to use initials rather than names. Heh.

UPDATE: LOL! "I'm stuck in a future data orgy" heh
