IT'S ELEMENTARY, MY DEAR GOOGLE? Permanent link to this item in the archive.

Now, someone please correct me if I'm wrong here, but I was just reading the instructions on the Google Base Bulk Upload section and took a great interest in finding about doing bulk uploads with RSS via ftp. I've been thinking about scripting uploads from dynamically-aggregated user-generated content (phew!) from any source, using PHP on my servers. But I've spotted a schoolboy error (I think!).

Here are their specs for using RSS2.0 and extending it with extra 'stuff'...

It says:

 Section 1: Extending RSS 2.0

 Below is an example of a basic single-entry RSS 2.0 document. Based on the RSS 2.0 specification there are three recommended attributes at item level title, description, and link.

And then goes on list the customisation you can do around RSS 2.0

Can you spot the mistake?! Surely?

They even missed the clue in their own Google Base Schema! I left a clue for you in the title of this post ;)

COMMUNITY SERVER WORKING Permanent link to this item in the archive.

The lovely new community server I set up is still working! Another new user! Hi FRED!

I posted this over on http://blogs.attengine.com/attengine about how I did it. I thought I'd post it here too, as that server won't always be there:

"IT WORKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i think.....

 If you can see this, then what you're looking at is being served to you by a small mini-itx based pc under my bedside table (lol) down my adsl line!

 Apache is NOT running here. The OPML Software running is doing the serving to http://blogs.attengine.com

 I had to add 'A records' to my DNS setup for this domain to do this: (VERY easy at GoDaddy.com)

 rpc to my home ip

 blog to my home ip

 host to remote server

 I used NetDrive to create a drive letter permanently mounted to a remote folder on my server via ftp. This is where Apache is. THANKS ENGADGET!

 The remote Apache is set up to receive hits for host.attengine.com and point to the folder which I have set as the remote path for the ftp login in NetDrive.

 I edited the opmlStartupCommands.txt file to this:

 user.opmlserver.enabled = true;

 user.opmlServer.rpcName = "rpc.attengine.com";

 user.opmlServer.hostname = "host.attengine.com";

 user.opmlServer.blogsname = "blogs.attengine.com";

 user.opmlServer.ipAddressPort80 = "84.9.61.33";

 user.opmlserver.folder = "X:\\";

 where X is the NetDrive letter poing right to the webroot of host.attengine.com

 and the IP is my external IP.

 I hope this helps others give this a go

 When I get a chance, I'll build a HOWTOPML file

INTERESTING POST FOR STARTUP FOUNDERS Permanent link to this item in the archive.

Friends and Strangers? - or Fiends and Stranglers?

This is an interesting post from Noam Wasserman, a professor in the Entrepreneurial Management unit at Harvard Business School, about founding startups with friends or strangers.

 In my experience, I think the main issues are trust and passion - along with invaluable abilities. With those two things in place, you can take alot on the chin from colleagues. You trust them and they're passionate. Any rifts will resolve without explosions. Hopefully everyone is passionate. Be error tolerant too. We ALL make mistakes.

 Someone needs to tap their finger on the table to get attention or decorum if it's needed and everyone needs to respect that, without worrying about who's 'King'. :)

STILL WORKING! Permanent link to this item in the archive.

I am up here: http://blogs.attengine.com/attengine

 Three users!! Count 'em!! AMYLOO, FRAN and KENTOMPKINS

Anyone else? :)

 I will play more with this alot later today. Especially there blog templates. iplan to try and add Flash MP3 players for podcast posts etc.

So, how do files get there?

 Every time you create a file anywhere within the www folder on your local machine they will appear at http://hosting.whatevercommunity...er/ somefile.jpg

 all our opml files end up on the hosting server too!

 It is the Community Server running on blogs.whaveter.com that render that OPML as HTML

Just to point out that I'm justing testing stuff here. No rush. No hurry. No deadllines. No stress. Just a little diggin'. ;) I was going to just sit back and see how people got on. But I just couldn't resist it! darn you!!

I'm feeling positively ludic.
