SONY PSP OFFICIALLY PODCASTING Permanent link to this item in the archive.

Wooo! The new firmware update to the Sony PSP has added an 'RSS Channel' feature for downloading podcasts. Cool! No rootkits here then! Appears to need more thought though, as they miss out on pure text feeds for offline reading.

UPDATE: going to check this, as their docs say you can only 'stream' the audio 'live'. Are they mad? Have they not heard of 'on-demand'? Sheesh. Reports to come.

UPDATE2: NOT impressed. After adding a channel, which happens very nicely when you click an RSS link, the app does not let you download the mp3 at all for offline listening. It 'streams' it only!!! Argh!! Sony??? What ARE YOU DOING??? PAY ATTENTION 007!!!

Not only that, but the sample RSS feed which they provide incorrectly sets the mp3 enclosure type to be 'audio/mp3' - this should be 'audio/mpeg'. Somebody needs to tell Sony about the rest of the world's formats and mimetypes ;)

Also, you don't seem to be able to start a podcast playback then leave that app to use another, such as a game or the web browser. So, an interesting foray into citizen media from Sony, but I give it 5/10.

I have been thinking of building a PSP website, with the exact sizes right etc. No reason why I couldn't add RSS feeds in there with the ability of downloading 'packages' or text to read offline using the built in browser. Effectively storing a mini website on the memory stick. Hey, you could probably use SEE's to update just parts of it. Hmmm..

Looks like I'll be grabbing some more MemoryStick Duo 2Gb sticks on our trip to the States. ;) Gotta love that exchange rate

AHAH! Permanent link to this item in the archive.

AHAH [Asychronous HTML and HTTP] is a very simple technique for dynamically updating web pages using JavaScript. It involves using XMLHTTPRequest to retrieve (X)HTML fragments which are then inserted directly into the web page, whence they can be styled using CSS

This looks very simple indeed. I'll post some tests soon.

load test text

Hmmm.. it does not seem to allow loading content across (sub)domains, which poses a problem here where we have blogs... and hosting...

Is this the same for all XMLHTTPRequests?

Possible security risks I suppose - Firefox just does nothing - Explorer tells me 'permission denied'.

This test works, as it is all on hosting.opml.org
