POWER TO THE PEOPLE (Lennon 1971) Permanent link to this item in the archive.

This is funny. And powerful. Dave Winer illustrates the power of people: he goes to visit Yahoo!, pioneers of search, information, taxonomy, community and innovation... later, on his blog he asks what the fuss is over some photos he found on Flickr, which look like riot police in Palo Alto. He ask for clues. Yet he has no comments enabled on his blog... but he doesn't need to...

Now, follow the link to the images : I can already see comments from up to 6 hours ago (obviously this will rise, but it's 6 now while writing this). None before then. A few have added some pointless comments but one has provided a link to what appear to be the facts of the situation portrayed in the photos. There you go! Data!

Proving the power of people, imho. Sure, search is great. And technology is great for organising data in ways so we can discover and retrieve information at speed. But nothing beats this kind of action on the web for me. Answers from real people, just by pointing and asking.

That's powerful. Get it?

ps: this never meant to link with Lennon. It just happened when I re-read what I'd written and realised,"hey, give peeps a chance!" ;)

btw: years ago, while out of work, I painted the picture above.

pps: John Lennon was shot five times in the back 25 years ago today in New York City. Rest in Peace.

ppps: Another hero/inspiration was Jim Morrison : He would have been 62 today.
