Until I relocate the server box from the bedroom, it's time to turn it off for a few hours while I get some sleep ;) - Have a go at setting up your own server using the the instructions below. HOW TO SET UP YOUR OPML COMMUNITY SERVER I have started to create some instructions here for you to follow: http://hosting.opml.org/kosso/howto/opml_community_server_howto.opml open this file url in your OPML Editor to read it ;) UPDATE: More notes and a howto emerging from DanMac (if I may call him that) too - I know too many Dans ;) - In fact I know too many Jons, which I why I use my nickname, 'Kosso' all the time, for years. Hope this helps. Please let us know how you get on. :) GORDON'S ALIIIIIIIVE!! MY OWN OPML SERVER Woohooo!!! It bloody works!!!! Roll out the barrel!! etc etc... Hallelujiah!!! Well, well, well. Looks like the ATTENGINE OPML Community Server is up and running. Single machine, single IP. Three subdomains (blogs, host and rpc) See also Amy, Attengine, Fredz and Ken - and newcomer, Dean Thanks to Dan MacTough for suggesting I remove the ipAddressPort80 line all together.
And of course.. thanks Dave! Good morning. OK. I have fired up my OPML Community server again, to try and get this working fully. It's almost there. See the post over on http://blogs.attengine.com/attengine SHOCKER: IPODS ARE NOT THE ONLY MP3 PLAYER! Strange as it may seem, dear readers, but Apple's iPods are NOT the only mp3 players there are. The choices consumers have for portable audio are endless! You can't move for choices at places plike CES or CeBit where manufacturers show off their wares. (And if I remember correctly, Apple don't even go to these shows) I was just on another site, talkr.com, which looks very smart in what it does, but not so in the language it uses: "Talkr allows you to listen to text-only blogs on your iPod." - Oh well, then I guess I can't use it on my Archos, or any other MP3 players I own. I'd better not reccommend this service to anyone else I know who listens to MP3s, but doesn't own an iPod either. Oh well. LISTEN UP!! It's time to : AGITATE! - EDUCATE! - ORGANISE!!! (which I believe 'RSS+OPML to the power of users' is ALL about. Yes, yes, yes, you can go on about "oooo, well, the iPod is the most popular, so nerrr, we don't need to know anything else" angle - see comments in the previous post on this subject. I want to know what the most popular 'something' is out there and see if the market is skewed like this too? For example, if a Ford was the most popular car in the world, would people sell petrol 'for a Ford?' "Come and buy some gasoline for your Ford" - "Do you need to get from one place to another BY ROAD?? - Well, you will need to have a Ford" - "What is driving?? - Well, it's about sitting in a Ford and pushing pedals and steering and stuff" etc. etc. Do you see what I mean? Maybe I could use a better analogy, but so many people have no idea about the alternatives. Suckers. It really does appear to be a case of one born every minute. And I'll say again here, I don't have anything against the iPod - it is a sexy gadget, which appears to do what it says it will do very well - but don't own one (yet) as it does not offer me the freedom and flexibility that I have grown to require over many years of owning many gadgets: Replaceable rechargable battery packs (by me!) - multiple format video support - more choices of tools to get content on and off - a screen which doesn't scratch so easily - updateable firmware - black headphones ;) Time to turn it off again for a bit. (The server is next to my bed!) So, you wont get reply from attengine.com until tomorrow. Good night.
