Heeheeheehee! I'm just listening in too! I think it's time for a KOZCAST.

tomorrow. i've been v busy coding this other 'thing' at the moment. be right witcha.

BTW: I have updated my copy of the OPML Communty Server Installation HowTo (in OPML, natch) with Dan's additions and changes.

I want to also point out that Ken Tompkins and I spent some time a while ago trying to get the OPMLCS running on a Mac. I have yet to try this again since our recent successes.

ANY OLD ICON Permanent link to this item in the archive.

Weird that the designer of the original XML icon (and many Radio 'themes') does not have one on his blog

Maybe, now the default icon of choice from the browsers is the square one seen in Firefox, he doesn't like it any more. ;)

The stylesheet seems to be amiss too. Grey on grey? "Schurley schome mischtake, Mischter Bond?"

 Cute kid though

Cooo, and here's where the need and request for that little ole icon came about, back in 2000!

BLOGLINES OPML EXPORT INVALID Permanent link to this item in the archive.

I was just looking for Robert Scoble's (infamous) bloggroll, since he was asking a while back about my 'Flashy Blogroll' (on the right) and I found a link to the export of his subscriptions from Bloglines. Here's the link.

I can see one blinding error in the output, which is causing my aggregator to freak out a little - each element has used an attribute called 'title=' to contain the text for each feed/node. This should be 'text='. See the spec. A very easy fix for the Bloglines developers, don't you think?

Please, please can they fix it, so these OPML exports validate?

'PUBLIC RSS ADVISORY BOARD' Permanent link to this item in the archive.

Rogers Cadenhead chairs the all-new and 'Public' RSS Advisory Board, an independant organization formed in 2003 that publishes the RSS spec, helps developers create RSS apps and broadens public understanding of the format.

They say that 8 new members have come on board: Meg Hourihan (co-founder of Pyra - Blogger), Loïc Le Meur (SixApart), Eric Lunt (FeedBurner), Ross Mayfield (SocialText), Jenny Levine (The Shifted Librarian), Randy Charles Morin (KBCafe - RSS meta search), Greg Reinacker (NewsGator) and Dave Sifry (Technorati)

How were these people chosen? They obviously have efforts and real products out there in the RSS space, which would qualify them for the 'job'. I'd be interested in knowing where in the world they come from too. Yes, Loïc is French and SixApart have a base in USA, Europe and Japan. But what of the rest of the organisations which these people represent? Are there any non-profits in there (Jenny?) Any 'thinktankers'? Academics? I just get the feeling that some people might take this list to task at some point. They are clearly a knowledgeable bunch and I'm sure (and I hope) will strive to do the right thing, but I doubt everyone will share that point of view. Just a hunch.

Notable omissions in this list: Adam Curry & Dave Winer who were listed on the RSS2.0 spec page, along with another name I can't remember (along with Rogers) - but now that paragraph has gone. Also, I'm suprised to not see Nick Bradbury (FeedDemon etc.) there too.

I wonder if they will be including details of Simple Shared Extensions in the proposed 're-draft' of the RSS2.0 spec.? I hope so - since the release of the IE7 Beta 2 Preview, an 'RSS Platform' the ball will be rolling faster for this knowledge. Also, here is a Channel9 video from Scoble, where he interviews Dean and the IE Team.

I like the idea of N.V.S (no, not 'envious') - it stands for 'Normalise, Validate and Sanitise', which is a good idea, if you ask me ;)

'BUGS' FROM DAN Permanent link to this item in the archive.

Dan has been trying to set up his OPML Server behind a different port to the the default port 80 (the standard web serving port) dues to restrictions placed by his ISP, but seems to run across a few problems which he talks about on his blog. He has found the section in the opml.root -> suites.opmlServer.startup which appears to concatenate the bits to build your urls.

 adrdata^.prefs.url = "http://" + user.opmlServer.hostname + "/"

I would have thought it is possible for him to append the port to the user.opmlserver.hostname setting in the opmlStartupCommands.txt file [eg: blogs.yabfog.com:1030 , etc] , or maybe we need another setting like user.opmlserver.port in the startup file?

I suppose the former would be better, then a user could have 'host' on one port and 'blogs' on another?

Hmmm...?

ANY MORE FOR ANY MORE? Permanent link to this item in the archive.

Just wondering if anyone else has had a go at following the instructions for setting up their own OPML server? With more testers trying, we should be able to tighten up the guides and learn more. And then moooove on!
