Woo! It works! I knocked up a flickr slideshow viewer which reads the RSS feed of any tag you give it displays it on a screen. Here are some snaps I took of it and uploaded back to flickr :) hehe. Woo, meta!

Second Life Hackr 

Cool! Hot on the heels of my Second Life podcast player, which you can find (and buy) dotted around the RSS Platform and the Bluggcast Balcony in Second Life, Matt Biddulf (aka Matt Basiat) from the BBC (still?? I dont think so, hmm) has hacked together a neat ish way of using the new HTTRequest functionality, (with some server side Rails code - could just as easily be any web scripting language though) and created a way of showing Flickr images on your land.

As a Second Life land owner, you are able to set an audio 'media url' to a section of land and also a Quicktime movie url - or url to anything Quicktime supports - or a Jpeg - this can then be applied to an object surface.

My podcast player allows the owner to stand near it and type feed:http://www.whatever.your.podcast.feed.url.is.xml and the land will automatically play the latest podcast in that feed (playlist to come). I have it set to the audio.weblogs.com feed quite alot, as that audio is always changing.

So, inspired by Matt's new code, I'm going to knock up a quick bit of PHP which should return photos from Flickr based on a tags provided by the owner.

Hopefully I should be able to get it to save settings and lists of photos and tags etc, to create some kind of in-world Zeitgeist of what photos people want to see in Second Life.

Some amount of this effort will be wasted to a point - and depending on if you want the data to talk to objects in-world - by the introduction of the forthcoming 'uBrowser'. This will let you place a real live copy of Mozilla onto an object in Second Life. There is a demo here for Windows users which will blow you away, when you think of the possibilities.
