A Perfect Example
This recording demonstrates the fatal flaw of today's Analyst model and the vapid paid commercialism that results.
| | Kim Cameron of Microsoft is on a tear to sell a personal and controversial solution to a problem. There are many other fortunes being gambled that he's wrong and that there are other and better solutions. This is a topic that needs some objectivity. The Enterprise Clients that turn to the Burton Group expect some kind of wisdom. |
| | The recording makes it clear that the Burton Group takes in too much money from Microsoft, directly or indirectly, to do anyting but rubber-stamp this unproven approach. And that's a shame. When I saw that Craig was on the call with Kim, I thought there might be some pithy insight, some more reasoned view. |
| | It's not reasonable to expect otherwise. The Analysts take money from both sides. They can't be objective with either. What else would we expect. |
It Hurts
to listen to Kim Cameron on his Identity Card stew based on his personally concocted Laws of Identity.
| | He's written a new holy book. He asks the community to worship the book. Everything flows from the book. Believe and all will be well. |
| | He feels he can define the dialog, can frame things as if the holy writ mattered. Besides, he's trying to make it one of the core values of Microsoft Vista (used to be Longhorn, some of us will think of it as Windows 2007). |
| | The fact that Doc Searls, a journalist and not a technologist, or that Burton (bought and paid for) isn't stomping on this, doesn't matter. It's a unilateral proposal that has no community buy-in. And, it's the latest thing that Microsoft will introduce and supercede in two to four years. |
| | I'm old and even more skeptical than I was in my twenties (a long time ago). Put this in the same pile as so many other tiny failures supported by loud voices from within Microsoft (or any other large ISV with more money than brains). |
OPML Editor Discussion
Donovan, this is the same software that's under Radio Userland!
| | There are two MAJOR differences. First, the community server is simpler and something you can run for yourself. Second, the local "client" (OPML Editor) doesn't yet have all the goodies that Manila and Radio had. |
| | But the code for both is visible in EVERY copy of OPML Editor. So, people can extend both parts. There's no reason we can't get local rendering and for it to do inclusion correctly. It's just that somebody has to do the code. |
| | Dave Winer has a strong set of interests and commitments. But outside them, he generally looks to others to help themselves and find allies to help. Like any of us, he focuses on his own interest areas and avoides distractions (like me) when he can. |
Headset
Time for a little Heil headset action. The Traveller and 2 of 4 adapters!
| | Between the radios and the cell phone and the podcast, I need a decent headset. Everyone complains about the sound from the cheap ones. Maybe a Heil is the answer. |
| | Haven't had a sound check on a real call yet, but got the Traveller SS (Single Side) and adapters for the PC (and cell phone ... maybe), the FT-817ND, and the Icom T90-A. Forgot the Kenwood TM-D700 ... but that can wait. |
Short Expectations
On the sarcastic Long or Short Capital ("Financial Research - Let us think for you, since we're better at it.") blog, a discussion of Investor Relations Programs.
| | Not sure if the findings (very funny) are as interesting as the 2x2 matrix premise. But the first paragraph had the gem: "the triumph of the short-term (12 week) focused analyst over the long-term (12.5 week) focused analyst". |
Today
Another 5272m, lazy morning.
| | Above 219 this morning. Go figure. Fern mentioned that I'd lost weight last night. Jordan doesn't seem to notice. 18+20. |
