It was a poignant evening. My brother in law, the saint, called. Fern's sister's husband, Henry called. He wanted to thank her for a lovely round patio table we gave them when we moved her from Connecticut to California. It turned magical from there.

Fern's sister Laurie was in a terrible car accident. She survived but there was serious brain damage and she's fighting every day to be what she was and to keep what she has. And Henry, the mench that he is, is the partner we all pray we have when the chips are down.

So he calls to say thanks because they had a mob over and it's nice to have a big table right off the kitchen. But Fern's not home yet. So we start on the lottery: $250M that neither of us won and go off into sailboats we'll never own again and why you hire the captain with the bareboat in the Carribean.

We also wander through the vagaries of the cost of commercial space on Long Island. And how nice Newport Beach is compared to LA. And how he met Laurie after deciding to move out here. And how he's still there. And how they repossessed the sailboat, probably illegally ... and all that

But at the bottom, it's good to talk to a friend.

Are we having fun yet? Permanent link to this item in the archive.

The LA Times claims the Administration has asked congress for $85m to take on Iran. It was an Op-Ed piece on Sunday. Think Progress starts there and then points to an unclassified cable from the State Department and claims it details the strategy. But they seem to be two separate stories.

Neither the LA Times nor Think Progress point to any substantiation of the purported $85M request to congress for a plan "not just to contain Tehran's nuclear ambitions but also to topple the Iranian government". Sad. One would think such a request would leave quite a trail and that much of the world would be talking about it.

And the State Department program is about getting language experts into places where they can interact with Irani communities outside Iran itself. Sounds reasonable on the surface. Hard to see how a couple of dozen language capable State Department folks and a collection of Policy wonks in DC are part of a grand scheme for Regime Change (invasion).

Think Progress then goes off on a tear ripping into a plan, as if they could see one. And then they wonder why Joe and Sally don't get it? I don't get it. Not from this tripe.

And we missed it. Jordan and I were walking up the hill and didn't even notice! How weird is that. I feel cheated

IdM implementation: One reader's cautionary tale Permanent link to this item in the archive.

The latest Dave Kearns article. Skip past the announcements on behalf of Netpro (Active Directory? Really?) and Eurikify. It's an interesting look at a role based access control failure.

Well, this is consistent with Symas's thinking. We're not fans of the galactic top-down models in any case. Roles are not as simple as one thinks and local conditions blurs them pretty well. The locals often don't see things the way central planners do.

Of course, the way most of the IdM systems work, with their centralized databases, it's hard to do more than one location without tearing your hair out. Or starting a civil war. [In Our Not So Humble Opinion].

Very interesting basic political platform. it's definitely something I can support.
