Doc Searls is on a tear about "Intention" as different from "Attention" and "Attention". Neither feels compelling to me ... but I'm a Gemini <smiles>

The Attention rant is about people getting access to and use out of all the data online sites collect about what they've paid "attention" to. It's a cry that our various wanderings and curiosities and purchases are our property and we should be able to share that with whomever we want or to use if for our own purposes.

Well, so save your attention data. The people you complain about have spent a small fortune each collecting it for you and using it "for you" in their own ways. Just like the infrastructure of the toll-payment systems collect information from your transponder and use it to make paying tolls easier, for seeing how fast you get from point to point, and for telling the courts where you were when someone wants to try to break your alibi. All you need to do is invest in the technology to do the same for yourself.

I suspect it turns out your "attention" is a lot more important to a commercial or public sector collector than it is to you. This area is fraught with privacy issues but, in general, the Web community has been OK with the way it's been handled so there's no huge problem to solve here.

As for Doc's "intention", tracking the evanescent wanderings of people like me who are attracted to distractions of all kinds for no apparent reason might reveal what appeared to be patterns but really turned out to be the equivalent of motes of dust in the air. If a registry of real "Intentions" were to be built, it would become, IMHO, the biggest spam attractor ever invented. And, I suspect, the people most willing to pay for the opportunity to use my Intention would be among the least interesting in plenty of cases.

My intention to buy an accessory for something, a book, office supplies, or whatever is generally framed in the context of the known suppliers or search strategies. I'm not sure I need to open up my already noisy personal shopping environtment to additional unwanted voices.

People need to pay more attention to what happens on eBay. Attention freaks are trying to navigate based on the bubbles in the wake of what I did before. Bad Idea. Intention freaks want to somehow have me announce (implicitly or explicitly) where I'm going. Silly idea since I generally don't know except the biggest picture. Rather, enterprises need to focus on building reputation among real people so they get recommended and remembered for the monentary flash of potential needs.

 Just my two cents.

Today Permanent link to this item in the archive.

Rowed 6Km today for time: 31:17.1 at light exertion.

Better speed than last light session.

Decided to switch to fixed distance pieces. I can manage that to always go longer (time) than 30 minutes <winks> Looks like I'd need to go 6.5Km for high-exertion to break 30.

The rain broke up and now it's cells.

Jordan hates thunder. He curls up under the desk when there's any for miles around. The first time, the thunder was far away and I didn't pay attention. But when it got closer, I knew why, uncharacteristically, he was hiding under there.

 It's the best "cave" upstairs.

End of day: Distractions Permanent link to this item in the archive.

It's good that Netcasting audio has gotten so good. There's actually stuff worth listening to. But it's a distraction.

So is running to Kinko's to pick up a copying order that they screwed up. It's faster to come home and fold and staple the copies than have them do the job and come back tomorrow.

Got a little time in on the drum, the rowing machine, the radios. It's a tough balance.
