Plutocracy and the Party of the People. A long screed ... a precis of the upcoming book?

There is no rational, measured, intelligent discourse ... Permanent link to this item in the archive.

and there probably never was.

Why is this a meme all the political writers fall back on? Who thinks political discourse was ever fair or honest? It is propaganda ... period.

The same can be said of the utterances of elected officials with re-election hopes or party responsibilities. Why would anyone think a presidential statement is "true." It's calculated propoganda and it's up to others to find and publish the truth (whatever that might be).

But don't expect the purveyers of soap (the corporate media of any ilk or flavor) to tell you the truth.

They're too busy selling soap and making sure their porridge tastes the way their marketeers think it should. The corporate media tells just enough bad news about the least offensive stores to look like they care. But they tell the absolute minimum (meaning zero in many cases) about the more offensive stories that beg for attention. Because it doesn't sell soap.

Truth be told, the American people have been trained to believe "Reality TV" by "The News". It's all carefully staged and neatly mediated. It's all about carefully crafted first and second level messages and morals (to the stories). Reality is more grisly and confusing than The Media's version.

It's not convenient for The Media to show the pictures of Rumsfeld and Bush sucking up to Sadam Hussein in the good old days or to report on how many millions the US contributed to Osama (Usama?) bin Laden back in the day. It's not polite to talk about the training camps whe taught them to set up and run or the betrayals, one by one.

Just a couple of thoughts for the day.

Rowed 10Km in 48:33.2 ... not awful and not great.

2:25.7, 1/2 a second faster than the last one and I'm 5th out of 5 on the year <groans>.

Gray windy marine layer morning. It's trying to burn off but I wouldn't bet on it any time early.
