Making use of the CBC opml file ![]()
OK. I think I'm getting the inclusion thing! Finally.
CBC hosts an opml file here.

I'd found this quite some time ago but didn't know what to do with it. I dropped it into the Finder and every few months would double-click on it and say "wow! it's live!" And then forget about it.
So I've had another look at it. I started including it in my IO. The problem was that is has a number of nodes I'm not interested in. I'd delete the nodes I didn't want but of course every time I opened the top level node it would refresh all the content.
I finally realized that I could simply copy out the nodes I was interested in and place them where ever I wanted in my IO. Well how cool is that?
Now I'd like to figure out how to include the headlines and links in my other blogs easily.
aha, got it
Where is it? I thought mine would be at

Oh wait, I'm looking more carefully and probably it's here
http://hosting.opml.org/petercook/instantOutliner/peterCook.opml
Yup, that's it.
This morning I saw this post from Donovan in my "NetNewsWire". He had a link to his IO at
http://127.0.0.1:5337/outlinerSubscribe?url=http%3A%2F%2Fhosting.opml.org%2Fdwatts%2FinstantOutliner%2FdonovanWatts.opml&author=Donovan%20Watts
I clicked on it and was asked by OPML if I wanted to subscribe. Cool? How did that happen? How on earth did "Donovan" (is he hot yet!?) come up with that URL?
BTW, the first time I answered "yes" I got some hideous error message in Safari. But the next time Safari said something like "success". And there it was, in my Buddies outline, Donovan's IO.
Oh yes. The gossary (I keep typing flossary . . . I visualize dozens of people madly flossing their teeth) is at
user.html.glossary
which works for the WordPress tool but not the "bib". If you are asking where the bib glossary is . . . so am I!
I am so not hot
Whoops, that was funny. I had the online and local instances of my IO open at the same time. Confusion!
We've all got questions. So many questions. And some of those questions are about OPML. Of course we have an outliner to help us keep our questions (and answers) organized. The problem is we have so many bloody outlines. I am still struggling to figure out how to best use each of them.
I'm typing in an outline right now. But when tomorrow comes 'round and I "Open today's outline" I'm not going to be looking at this particular outline. It's going to be buried somewhere on my site (which I never look at) and in the Finder . . . which, for now, does not do a good job of "finding" things wrapped up in OPML. I need a hero!
Then there's the Instant Outliner. "Donovan" has a FAQ or his own questions. I know what he means: sometimes you ask yourself over and over (else how to put the F in the FAQ?) ;-] Anyway, I thought for a moment that it would indeed be a good idea to keep a questions outline in my IO. And I'll also add an answers section for when I figure these things out or (more likely) get the answer from someone who's ahead of/smarter than me!
But what about "inclusion"? Need to wrap my head around that one. I know what it does but how do I implement it and make the most of it?
And we each have our own Directory. Or we could have. I don't. Yet. Related to inclusion I guess.
I guess the thing to do is figure out what each of these tools is particularly good at and use the right tool for the right job. Keeping in mind, of course, that some of this is about conversation. And how do you have conversations with these tools? I see it happening here and there within IO. It feels awkward right now, probably 'cause I haven't figured out how to play this instrument. Got some woodshedding to do.
OK. I'm getting tired of typing "built-in blogger" so for now I'm going to use "bib". And once I figure out where the glossary for the bib is I'll type "bib" and you'll see "built-in blogger".
For someone who's getting tired of typing "built-in blogger" I sure am typing "built-in blogger" a lot.
Oh, here's another one. IO = Instant Outliner
Tonight I remembered that 5 years of my weblogging is missing from the web. It's all sitting on my drive wrapped up in an old Manila root. Must do something about that.
Thanks to "Donovan" for indicating in the change notes exactly what he'd done to update his template. I was able to add in the changes without messing up the basic changes I'd previously made. Now I suppose I'll have to create a "blogroll". ;-] And I'll have to check my notes about changing the rss feed icon.
Hmmm. Seems that the 10.4.5 update included a change in Safari. When you add a bookmark the pop up menu to navigate to another folder has changed. It looked very strange at first. But it seemed like I could get to where I wanted to be faster. Now I can't remember what the old one looked like!
