OPML Community Server Gauntlet Throw Down.

I'm thinking about offering an OPML Community Server on Become the Media. When I registered the domain, my intention at the time was to run a Frontier/Manila server and offer free weblogs in the form of pcook.becomethemedia.org like a number of other services offered at the time...

Oh sure, put my name in lights. How can I not buy in?

Seriously though. Where to go when Dave pulls the plug. This would be a big problem for me. I like this tool so far. But truthfully the WordPress Tool is also pretty darn cool. And Dave -bless him - will run off to whatever catches his fancy next. It's not just the hosting that will disappear. But I don't have any experience with the open source community. I have to remember that we're in that space now.

I like writing in an outliner. I want to share what I write with non geeks and that means that I need my data rendered in opml. Beyond that it would be cool to have my geeky friends be able to access my opml files in their 'native state'.

Here'a a question. Could a mini version of the server run on our own machines, render our opml files to other directories, and then upload those rendered files where we need them? Where's the flaw in my thinking?

This has mostly been me thinking out loud, not necessarily clearly. Thoughtstreaming.
